Barium Sulfate (BaSO₄) Product Overview

Barium sulfate can be classified by source and production method into natural barium sulfate and precipitated barium sulfate. Their main differences and applications are summarized below:

 

Basic Differences (Summary)

· Natural Barium Sulfate (from barite ore, directly mined and ground): coarse particles, moderate whiteness and purity, low cost, high specific gravity.

· Precipitated Barium Sulfate (chemically precipitated): high whiteness and purity, controllable particle size (micron/nano options), good dispersibility, but relatively higher cost.

 

Main Applications — Natural Barium Sulfate

· Oil & Gas Drilling Fluids: The most important application, used as a weighting agent to increase mud density and prevent blowouts.

· Low-End / Bulk Fillers: For some construction coatings, general plastics, rubber, and paper to provide filler weight.

· Glass and Ceramics (Low-End): Used in situations requiring cost reduction or increased specific gravity (processing required).

· Industrial Weighting Materials: For certain composites, casting, and other applications requiring high density.

 

Main Applications — Precipitated Barium Sulfate

· High-End Coatings and Inks: Improves opacity, whiteness, rheology, and printing performance, especially where fineness and dispersibility are critical.

· High-Performance Plastics and Rubber: Acts as a functional filler, enhancing mechanical properties, dimensional stability, and surface finish.

· Pharmaceutical X-Ray Contrast Agents: Ultra-high purity, insoluble, and safe (medical-grade precipitated BaSO₄).

· Cosmetics: Used in foundations, loose powders, and other formulations requiring whiteness and safety.

· Fine Chemicals and Functional Materials: Nano/ultrafine precipitated BaSO₄ for special ceramics, optical materials, and electronic packaging.

· High-End Paper and Specialty Adhesives: Applications requiring high whiteness and filler performance.

 

Selection Recommendations (Practical)

· For low cost and bulk density requirements → choose Natural Barium Sulfate.

· For appearance (whiteness), dispersibility, stability, or medical/cosmetic safety → choose Precipitated Barium Sulfate (particle size can be selected as micron or nano grade).
